Behavioural Couples Therapy
Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT) is an evidence-based treatment for depression. It is a suitable treatment for a couple where low mood or depression is affecting at least one partner. BCT is based on the premise that symptoms of depression in one partner may be linked to aspects of the couple’s relationship and that enhanced couple functioning and reduced relationship distress are closely associated with improved mental health and wellbeing. A key task of the therapy would be to focus on communication difficulties and behaviour within the relationship, which have been shown to have an impact on both the incidence of depression and to strengthen relationship functioning. This treatment requires a commitment from both partners to participate in a couple-based approach.
